Drowning

Drowning

The story behind the song:

This was written for a friend who was going through some tough times. The lyrics were meant to capture the depths of her hurts and shine hope into her darkness. That was ten years ago.

Recently, the lyrics touched me in a very new and very real way.

I was chosing photos to depict a journey from darkness to light, from sorrow to joy. The first photo looks tomb-like, and it instantly reminded me of Jesus’ resurrection and the empty tomb. Right until that moment, I had not considered His journey of “drowning.” To become the Savior or mankind, Jesus stepped down from Heaven into the sea of sorrows. He did that to take our sin and to give us eternal life in exchange. The words, ” I don’t know my way up without falling,” were His, not mine.

Isaiah 53:3 says, “He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.”

Jesus went from the Cross to my tomb so that I could go from my tomb to the Cross. That makes the idea of “taking up my cross” so beautifully precious. And, somewhere on the journey depicted by these photos, I passed Jesus by as He took my place.

I hope that truth stirs you away from sorrow and toward the indescribable joy of God’s salvation.Just a little while longer, Beloved. The water may be deep, but you are not alone. God will carry you to the other side.
